October 26, 2002Catholic Artists For Relief Sweep 2002 Unity Awards!

Catholic Artists For Relief

Secular artists have the Grammy's...
Contemporary Christian artists have the Dove's...
And Catholic Christian artists have the Unity Awards...

On October 26, 2002 the United Catholic Music and Video Association (UCMVA) held it's third annual UCMVA Unity Awards show at the Hartke Theater, Catholic University, in Washington D.C. This was a beautiful night of praise and worship through song and Christian fellowship. Co-hosted by Pollyanna Dorough with a special guest appearance from Howie D of the Backstreet Boys, this event was no small deal!

Out of the vast pool of Catholic talent nominated in the various categories this year, one song and one group of artists stood out. The Catholic Artists for Relief and their song, "You Are Not Alone" took ten Unity Awards. The beauty of this song is that it was written in response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001 and the proceeds from the sales go to help the families of those killed in the attack on the Pentagon.

This touching song, "You Are Not Alone" was performed by these top notch Catholic Artists: David Patrick Bryan, Julie Carrick, Jamie Dillon, Lynn Geyer, Gretchen Harris, Greg Magirescu, James Milanesa, Jeannie Pomanowski, Katrina Rae, Ned Tonner, Sharon Urbano, Denise Underwood, and David Taylor Wright. The executive producers of the project and 2002 Video Producers of the Year are Katrina Rae and Ned Tonner.

This year's Unity Award show was ALL about the Catholic Artists for Relief! Their song and video, "You Are Not Alone" swept all of these 2002 Unity Award categories:

1) Song of the Year
3) Video of the Year
5) New Artist of the Year
7) Special Event Album of the Year
9) Songwriter of the Year

2) Pop/Contemporary Song of the Year
4) Group of the Year
6) Video Packaging of the Year
8) Special Event Video of the Year
10) Video Producer of the Year

Additional individual awards received by members of Catholic Artists for
Relief are:

David Patrick Bryan - International Video of the Year
Gretchen Harris - Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year
Katrina Rae - Praise and Worship Song of the Year and Country Song of
the Year.

November 20, 2001Song dedicated to Pentagon Victims Released

"You Are Not Alone" CD cover

Thirteen Catholic singers from New York to Los Angeles, and from British Columbia to Tennessee, including Nashville singers, Katrina Rae, Denise Underwood, and David Taylor Wright, shared in effort to raise funds for Pentagon attack victims by singing on soon to be released single, "You Are Not Alone."

The idea for a song came after President George W. Bush stated in a speech during the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance at the National Cathedral, Oct. 14: "To the children and parents and spouses and families and friends of the lost, we offer the deepest sympathy of the nation. And I assure you, you are not alone."

After hearing the president's address, artists Ned Tonner and Katrina Rae formed "Catholic Artists for Relief" and broadcast an invitation to songwriters across the country to submit a song using President Bush's words. At the same time they invited professional musicians to join in singing the special song they envisioned would help heal the country and raise funds for the victims. They contacted Armed Services YMCA after finding it on a web site for New York City and offered them all proceeds from the song. "We wanted to do something to help after the attack, and the YMCA provided the perfect outlet for us."

"You Are Not Alone" was recorded in Nashville Oct. 5-7 with a group of singers whose backgrounds include over two dozen albums.

Proceeds from the CD and a video that will accompany the song will be donated to the ASYMCA's Pentagon Survivors' Fund, which has already begun distribution of funds to families of those killed or injured in the terrorist attack on the Pentagon. When those families' needs are met, the money raised will go to support programs to help military families, such as financial counseling and childcare.

National ASYMCA executive director RADM S.Frank Gallo, USN, (Ret.), attended the recording session in Nashville. "It was incredible watching this group put this song together," he said. "I was impressed. And the song is really good."

The video includes filming done in Nashville at the Nashville War Memorial Plaza, as well as video and stills provided by the Defense Department's Joint Combat Camera Center and Press Office.

The CD and video set is scheduled for release on Nov. 20, just in time for Thanksgiving when the entire country celebrates the blessing of living in the United States. The song will be sent to YMCAs across the U.S., the military exchanges, 2,600 radio stations, and an expected 100 television stations.

The artists themselves contributed their time and donations to pay all costs with producing the set, so essentially all money raised will go to the the ASYMCA. The song and video set will be distributed to Christian bookstores throughout the country by HeartBeat Records.

God bless!

David
